919 launched as Star 919 on July 1 2021.
- In late 2022, the station shifted focus when a new management team came on board.
- In July 2023, we decided to rebrand.
- 919 is simple and distinguishes us from other radio brands which also use “star” in their name
Our transmitter is located in Bryanston, in northern Johannesburg, and our footprint stretches from Soweto to OR Tambo airport.
There’s a lot of competition for listener attention, especially in the areas we cover. Most other stations position their brands on music genres, decades or demographics. To stand out, we want to do things differently, and focus on a mindset: the power of music to make listeners feel good.
70% of the music we play is South African. Tune to 919, and you’ll hear tracks in almost any of the languages you’ll hear in Joburg – everything from Majozi and Lira, to Sunset Sweatshop and Kurt Darren, as well as international favourites.
Our outside broadcasts are already popular with schools and businesses in our catchment area, and we plan to grow this part of the 919 ecosystem. Future plans also include the 919 Academy to train South Africa’s future radio talent, based on the very successful recipe established by the Y Academy.
Ultimately, our goal is to become a byword for an upbeat, can-do attitude. It’s why Joburg inspires us. Feel good. Feel 919.
